Sections of two Crewe roads will be permanently closed from May 31 this year as part of Bentley Motors’ plans to expand its campus.

Bentley says the permanent closure of parts of Pyms Lane and Sunnybank Road are essential to secure its future in the town and grow the business.

Cheshire East gave the go-ahead in March 2018 for the company to expand its campus .

The ‘stopping up order’ – to close sections of the two roads as part of the development – was later granted by the Department for Transport.

The first gate to close off traffic will be at the east of Pyms Lane, close to the white Bentley office at 25 Pyms Lane.

Andrew Robertson, head of site planning at Bentley Motors, told CheshireLive : “Once the road is closed we will also be installing a lorry turning circle so if a lorry approaches the site and can’t come in it will be able to do a u-turn at that point.”

There will be two gates on Sunnybank Road.

“One at the railway bridge itself and one further up the road, further north, just above the turning into Legends,” said Mr Robertson.

“Legends is open to the public, so during normal working hours the southern most gate, the one by the railway line, will remain open and the northern most gate, just north of the turning into Legends, will be closed so there will be public access to and from the Legends facility.

“Out of Legends operating hours, we will close the southern most gates and open the northern most one so we will have operational access to Legends from the factory but you won’t be able to get into the factory at the south end.”

The west gate, on Pyms Lane, will be just after the turning into the Bentley showroom, so the showroom will remain on the public side of the road.

The company says it is doing all it can to improve access in and out of the car parks to help traffic flow.

“We’ve purchased Oaklea Farm, [off Middlewich Road] with the express intent of using the entry/exit point to give our colleagues another way of getting into the car park,” said Mr Robertson. “That will be in place before we close the road.”

He added: “We’re very sensitive to the fact this will have an impact on the surrounding area. Having spoken to lots of local residents, that impact is both positive and negative.

“A number of people in the local area are quite looking forward to not having our colleagues drive past their houses, a number are obviously concerned about the impact of the traffic on the surrounding areas so we’re going to do our absolute best to minimise that, so the purchase of that farmhouse is one of those key strategies because it gives us a separate complete entry direct into the car park.”

The luxury car manufacturer is also widening the entrance by the showroom to increase traffic flow in and out of the car park and has been in discussions with local highways officers about changing the timing on the traffic lights at the Pyms Lane junction with Middlewich Road.

About 150 people attended a public meeting organised by local Crewe councillors in 2017 when the possibility of closing sections of Pyms Lane and Sunnybank Road was first raised.

Among their concerns were fears Bentley employees would park on neighbouring streets of the Marshfield Estate and use the proposed pedestrian access as a shorter and quicker route to the factory.

When CheshireLive raised this point this week, Mr Robertson said: “Each of those access points is going to have swipe control turnstiles and one of the things we’re investigating is how we grant access to those turnstiles.

“We haven’t got it finally agreed yet how we operate that, but we are investigating means of not granting access to certain colleagues.

“There are colleagues who might have a legitimate use of those gates who live on Marshfield Estate, for example, people who live in Crewe and cycle to work, and others that we will take a less supportive view of them using those gates.”
